Hospice care is a type of care and philosophy of care that focuses on the palliation (pain and symptom management) of a person with a life limiiting illness.  It focuses on treating the person, as the center of care planning based on their preferences and values. Hospice care is not neccessarily for the last few hours of life. Some people do so well on hospice that they "graduate"  from services because they  no longer meet medical criteria. If a person physically declines again in the future, they can use their hospice benefit again. There is no limitation to how many times a person uses the benefit, as long as they meet medical criteria.  

The hospice patient receives a mobile care team, which includes an: M.D., registered nurse, nursing aid, chaplain, trained volunteers, and a social worker. As well as medical equipment (E.G., hospital bed, wheelchair, shower chair, oxygen etc.), supplies (E.G., incontinent supplies, gloves, wipes, lotions, soaps, disposable supplies, etc) and medications for pain and symptom management.  A team member is available 24/7.    

Medicare covers this benefit as well as the majority of other health insurance companies. Hospice care can be offered in your home, a nursing facility, inpatient setting, foster home or where ever else you call "home".  Some Secondary Insurance companies also include in your hospice benefit an inpatient benefit which covers the cost to live in a nursing facility or care home if needed or desired.
